The Explorer
Joe Woody is Co-Publisher of The Angler Magazine WNC and a U.S. Army veteran. After moving to Asheville, North Carolina over two decades ago, Joe dedicated his life to uncovering the wild, forgotten trout streams hidden deep in the Appalachian wilderness.
With unmatched grit and passion, he has hiked, climbed, and even rappelled into places few anglers have seen. His love for nature, storytelling, and fly fishing shine through in every expedition.
Joe's adventures are more than entertainment—they're a tribute to tradition, solitude, and the healing power of water. Each journey is a search for wild trout and even wilder stories.
Our Mission
Forgotten Streams of Appalachia is an adventure angling series that explores the wildest, most remote trout streams in the Southern Appalachian Mountains. From rugged hikes and steep climbs to rappelling and backcountry rafting, we push deep into untamed wilderness in search of wild trout—and even wilder stories.
Our mission is to document and preserve the hidden waterways that have been forgotten by time. These streams hold not just wild trout, but centuries of history, folklore, and natural beauty that deserve to be shared and protected.
Through cinematic storytelling and immersive exploration, we bring you into the heart of America's oldest mountains, where every bend in the stream reveals a new adventure and every cast tells a story.

Deep in the Appalachian backcountry lie streams so remote they barely appear on maps. These "blue line" streams are the lifeblood of wild trout populations, untouched by development and accessible only to those willing to venture off the beaten path.
Every expedition requires preparation, determination, and respect for the mountains. We navigate steep terrain, dense forests, and unpredictable weather to reach waters that few have ever fished. The journey is as important as the destination.
Fly fishing in these remote streams is both an art and a meditation. Each cast is a conversation with the water, a connection to centuries of tradition, and a moment of pure presence in nature's cathedral.
Exploration Philosophy
Topographic maps, GPS devices, and decades of experience guide us through unmarked terrain. We study watersheds, elevation changes, and historical records to find forgotten streams.
Lightweight camping equipment, water filtration systems, and emergency supplies ensure we can safely explore remote areas for extended periods.
We practice strict Leave No Trace principles, ensuring these pristine waters remain untouched for future generations. Every expedition is conducted with minimal environmental impact.
Professional camera equipment captures the beauty and stories of each expedition, preserving these moments for viewers who may never venture this deep into the wilderness.
"The mountains don't care about your plans. They demand respect, preparation, and humility. In return, they offer something priceless—solitude, beauty, and a connection to something greater than yourself."
